Amelia Peláez (b.1896, Yaguajay, Cuba; d.1968, Havana, Cuba)
Amelia Peláez was born to an upper middle class family with many children. Her affluent family brought her into the highest intellectual circles in Cuba. Amelia studied painting at the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts and was mentored by master artist Leopoldo Romañach. In 1927 Amelia went to Paris to continue her studies. In 1935 she returned to Cuba and became a member of the Vanguardia Cuban Avant Garde movement. This is when she developed her signature style with inspiration from fruit, architecture, and traditional Cuban stained glass.
Peláez struggled throughout her life to make a living as an artist. Often, she did not sell any paintings at her shows due to the non-acceptance of the modern art style. That changed in 1941 when she participated in a show in New York and had multiple purchases of her art by the Museum of Modern Art. Amelia had success late in her career and is regarded as one of the first Cuban female artists to be considered a Master.
